ABOUT SILVER SPRING CHILD CARE CENTER

Welcome to Silver Spring Child Care Center! We are a full-time, licensed child day care center serving ages two through five (through their last summer before entering first grade).  The Center was established in 1971 as a result of a proposal by a group of concerned citizens, predominantly from Christ Congregational Church in Silver Spring, to provide quality day care  for children of all social, economic and cultural backgrounds.

The Center is staffed with caring teachers trained in Early Childhood Education, and aides who assist them.  The staff-child ratio is 1 to 7 or better at all times (1 to 3 for two-year-olds).  Many of our teachers have been with us for 20 to 33 years – truly a rarity in the modern child care field.  This exceptionally long-term commitment to our Center is evidence of  how important the care and education of young children is to our staff.

Our maximum capacity is 47 children ages two through five.  We have five adjoining rooms of various sizes: the “Rainbow Bear” room, the “Magic Bear” room, the “Honey Bear” room, the “Sunshine Bear” room, are our pre-school classrooms. The “Pooh Bear” room houses our Two’s.  The transition that the children make from the Pooh Bear room to another as they mature is always gentle and occurs only when the child and parent feel comfortable with the progress.

New research shows that a strong bond between young children and their care provider is imperative.  For this reason, we do not disturb the connection between the child and his or her teacher with yearly moves.  Our goal for our children is to have them stay with the same teacher from the time they are three until they enter kindergarten.

With the exception of the Pooh Bear room, each of our  classrooms serves children of mixed age groups.  The potential benefits to children of mixed-age grouping are many.  Having an accepted  range of levels in the class allows for children’s individual development.  Mixed-age grouping encourages cooperation and promotes social skills for each age group. Cognitively, children experience conflict when they interact with children of other ages who approach problems differently.  This may push them to think through and articulate problems, and helps to stimulate their growth.  We find that the students are kinder and play together with more cooperation in our mixed-age classrooms.
